San Francisco Shopping Guide
San Francisco has some of the best shopping in the world. And in the United States, only New York City and Los Angeles can top the variety of known and upcoming designers and boutiques.
Union Square: This is the ritziest and most expensive shopping neighborhood in the 415 area code. Find boutiques like Chanel, Prada, Gucci, Dior, Luis Vitton and more, major department stores like Macy’s, Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus, and many other stores and boutiques on the blocks surrounding the square. While the area is saturated with expensive shops, there’s also cheaper shopping like Loehmans’s, Old Navy, Ann Taylor Loft and Nine West. If you’ve heard of the designer or brand, you can almost guarantee that their clothing and products are sold somewhere around Union Square.
Union Street: Located near the well-to-do neighborhood of the Marina, Union Street offers the many of the local designers and boutiques that can only be found in San Francisco. The shopping tends to be a bit more expensive, but it’s fun to see what different designers create, and there are some cheaper stores, as well as some more well-known stores, like Kenneth Cole, Bebe and Sephora. Make an afternoon of the street, about five or six blocks long, and enjoy Union Street’s shops and take time for a meal at one of the many wonderful restaurants. My personal favorite among the stores is Ambiance, which offers a variety trendy clothing and accessories at a variety of prices.
Haight Street: In the 60s, this notorious street kicked off the hippie movement. Today, it represents some of the most creative and inexpensive shopping in San Francisco. Visit unique, hippie-esque shops mixed in with more modern boutiques. Most of the shopping ranges from inexpensive to cheap, and there’s still quite a bit of the old flavor that made the neighborhood so famous 40 years ago. And this is one of the better neighborhoods in the city when it comes to great exotic restauarants.
